Google Removed 7 Million Fake Business Profiles In 2021

Throughout 2021, Google says it will delete seven million false company profiles and prevent the creation of another 12 million.

Google revealed in a report about how it makes Maps information credible that it eliminated seven million bogus business listings in 2021.

Furthermore, Google stopped the creation of tens of millions of bogus company profiles and disabled over a million "bad actor" user accounts.

Verifying the accuracy of data in Google Business Profiles and Google Maps is becoming more difficult as the quantity of submissions grows year after year.

People using Maps now contribute 20 million items every day to Google, including updated business hours, contact information, images, and reviews.

Here are the key takeaways from Google's research on how accurate Maps and Business Profile information is maintained.

How Google Maintains the Reliability of Local Business Information

To identify information in Maps and Business Profiles that is fraudulent or abusive, Google utilises a combination of machine learning and human operators.

In 2021, people provided content to 30 percent more businesses than in 2020, yet less than 1% of those contributions were labelled fake or harmful.

Most contributions are well-intentioned, as seen by the small fraction of fraudulent content, although "bad actors" occasionally try to make abusive revisions or build bogus Business Profiles.

The majority of harmful content is caught by Google before it appears in Search or Maps. In 2021, the following percentages of that material were identified.
